- holds many components of the system
- provides connectors for other peripherals
- processor slot : slot that hold a processor/central processing unit (CPU)and forms the electrical interface with the CPU
- memory slot : slot that hold memory modules, Random Access Memory (RAM)
- adapter card slot : Slot that hold adapter cards
